I'm not going to spend my life being a color.

Black or white, people, black or white? I’m trying to decide between a black car with a tan interior or a white car with a tan interior.

I’ve always thought white cars were girly in a good way. This assumption is based almost entirely on the fact that my brother had a girlfriend who used to drive a white Honda del Sol two-seat convertible that I openly coveted. Mind you, this is when I was in college and driving a 1987 navy blue transmission-fell-out-on-294-while-I-was-driving-a-carload-of-friends-to-the-zoo, brakes-went-out-on-the-way-to-my-grandmother’s-wake Buick LeSabre with bench seats.

It did have power windows, however, which made it a big step up from the rusted-out, no-power-steering monstrosity that I drove in high school.

Now that I am a Southern belle and whatnot, I feel like I can get away with a white car. It’s always warm and sunny here, and it doesn’t really snow, so salt and sludge and grit is not an issue. And I have heard that white doesn’t show knicks and scratches as much as black, and, let’s be honest. There will be scratches.

And, I think white would be good for a real estate agent. Assuming I can find clients here in Nashville.

Rob insists that a black car is sportier and classier, though I’m wondering if he may have ulterior motives (ie, he doesn’t want to look too girly when he’s driving it). Though I am inclined to just get black, because everything I have or wear or own is black, mostly because black goes with everything and I’ll be less likely to get sick of it.

In true Rob fashion, I have been Google-ing phrases to find the answers I seek, with hilarious consequences. After a few searches of “drives a white car,” “white car girly,” “black or white car better,” here is what I have learned, mostly from the strange individuals who post on car forums (content has been edited for grammar and punctuation, naturally):

- “The Toyota Yaris is a chick car. The thing is practically growing a vagina.”

- “1.) Jaguars are for queens. 2.) High-end Lexus sedans are for old Asian ladies.” (I’m sure Rob’s dad and mom, who drive a Jag and a Lexus, respectively, would be interested to hear this.)

- “I have a 2005 RAV4 and I’m sick of hearing, ‘Oh, that’s a cute car.’ Please, Toyota, stop advertising my car with a picture of a woman walking towards it holding a pair of high heels. I just can’t take it any more.” (Again for Rob’s dad, who wants to trade in his Jag for a RAV4.)

- There were quite a few votes for the Honda CR-V as a feminine car. Which I have to laugh at, because my brother calls Rob’s CR-V “the mommy truck.” However, the CR-V was far manlier than Rob’s second choice, the Subaru Forester. Which, according to my  lesbian professor for English 351 “The Literature of Lesbianism,” is the quintessential lesbian car.

- “BMW convertibles are for girls. They are also for arrogant pricks” and, “The difference between a BMW convertible and a cactus? The cactus has the pricks on the outside”  Har-dee har har.

It goes on and on like this. Car people are funny.

So now that I’ve spent two hours getting completely sidetracked and have come to no conclusions, please weigh in. Black or white?

For what it’s worth, I vote navy convertible.

To confuse you more: black cars are MUCH hotter when you get inside them (take it from someone who grew up in FL in heat stroke weather), and black cars actually DO show dirt/scratches/dings just as much as a white car. Think of it this way – take a black couch and a white couch – the black couch will show dust much more than the white one, but the white couch will show stains more.

In terms of real estate psychology; I’d think a black car somehow (NO LOGIC here) signifies you have more money. You want these buyers/sellers to think you’re not rich off their commissions. :)

I drive a black one, but also really enjoy white ones, depending on the model, so I’m of no real help. What kind of car are you getting? Exciting stuff! When is the big move to Nashville! I have to read your blog to keep up!

Well, it depends on the kind of car you are getting. But I agree, warm and sunny climates=white cars.
